
9th GRADE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The course of study includes the understanding of the components of physical fitness, both health and skill related and spatial awareness movements. Students will participate in individual, dual and team sports and group decision making. It is expected that students will achieve a selected norm level in physical fitness and motor skills tests.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION ELECTIVE COURSES
Students in grade 10 and 11 may select any two of the following elective courses:
Performance Development
This course is designed for students to participate in lifelong physical activities that will be suitable for maintaining a healthy level of fitness. Skill development needed to engage in the game/sport/or task successfully are developed. Rules will be adjusted to enhance the full participation within the standards rules of the game. In addition, students should show their ability to play strategically, to play in accordance with the most important rules, and to play so that all involved have a positive experience. The activities will include both individual and team sports.
Fitness Concepts
This course will address the components of health related fitness, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Students will be instructed in protocols to set up a personal fitness program, working and assessing the program. Students will participate and assess themselves throughout the course.
Total Body Fitness (new course)
This course will provide a variety of fitness experiences similar to those offered in health clubs classes. Designed to improve fitness & health, students will learn how to maintain overall health through a variety of fitness based activities which may include, but are not limited to: high-lo impact, cardio kickboxing, basic step, total body sculpt, interval training classes, and abdominal classes. Students will have the opportunity to set & achieve personal goals throughout the course. The course will be designed to accommodate ALL fitness levels
Games, Color of Life (new course)
This class emphasizes participation, challenge and fun rather than the need to win. It emphasizes play rather than competition. The class will include many new and alternative games, along with some twists on old games. Sportsmanship and honor are key components of this course. Students will be given the opportunity to express what they have learned by changing or modifying an existing game of their choice or developing a new game.
Yoga & Pilates
This course will help students connect mind and body. It is designed to improve athletic performance, and mental acuity. Students will learn many poses and moves associated with yoga, pilates. The focus of the course is to give students the tools to maintain a less stressful and healthier life.
12th GRADE REQUIREMENT
To be taken by seniors in senior year
Lifetime Skills
Students will be required to demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to achieve, maintain, or improve components of health related physical fitness. The topic of 'wellness" is discussed in detail. Students will also receive a valid certificate in Community CPR.
