PERFORMING ARTS CALENDAR OF EVENTS

The Performing Arts Department at Horace Greeley is truly a special place for students interested in music and drama. It is a "home away from home," where talented students become part of an exciting artistic environment for expert training in vocal music, instrumental music and theater arts. Camaraderie and friendship go hand-in-hand as students learn while having fun in a virtually 'round-the-clock music and theater program.
Greeley provides a supportive artistic environment for high school students who wish to concentrate in one performance area or become immersed in many high quality music ensembles and top-notch theatrical productions. Each year the Performing Arts Department opens its doors to new students who want to learn to play an instrument, improve their public speaking, sing in a vocal group, or receive hands-on experience in theatrical design.
Experienced vocalists and instrumentalists are challenged to reach the highest performance levels in groups such as the Chorus and Madrigal Choir, the Orchestra and Chamber Ensembles, the Concert and Symphonic Band, Stage Band, and Pep Band. As active participants in the New York State School Music Association, Greeley musicians have proudly represented our school in the highly competitive All-State and All-County bands, orchestras, and choruses. And operating in our auditorium, complete with state of the art sound equipment, the Theater Company is the training ground for young performers in acting, singing, choreography and stage craft, where self-confidence, poise, problem solving ability and teamwork is developed to the fullest.
Throughout the years students have organized their own special vocal and instrumental ensembles, which are popular additions to our program.
Student theatrical directors have a free hand in writing, casting, directing and performing their own scenes in the Spring Drama Festival. And as a grand finale, all musical groups come together for the open air "Pops" concert every June to end a busy year in the arts.
Over 300 Greeley students pass through the doors of the Performing arts Department on any given day to participate in more than 27 credit-bearing ensembles and courses. Students hone their thespian skills in Acting classes. Analytical and aural skills are developed in Music Theory and continue for college credit in Advanced Placement Music Theory.
Those with a creative or technical bent can "spin the dials" in our Stagecraft course and in the Greeley electronic music lab.
There is no better place for musicians and actors to play, perform, sing and act that at Horace Greeley High School. For some, it is the stepping stone to majors in music and drama at such highly regarded institutions as the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, Carnegie-Mellon and Tisch School of Drama at New York University. For others, it is a place to develop their budding musical and theatrical talents to the fullest. For all, it is a warm, accepting place to make friends, share common interests and enrich their four years at Greeley. Hopefully, their love of music and drama will continue beyond high school, continuing to be a fulfilling part of their adult lives.
