Band is offered as an elective course in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades. High School Band is a continuation of the instrumental music program offered at Roaring Brook Elementary, Westorchard Elementary, Douglas G. Grafflin Elementary, and the Seven Bridges and Robert E. Bell Middle Schools.
The High School ensembles rehearse daily over a three “mod” period. Students who play woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments must be registered for Band as their primary music course. Band students may also join one other performance ensemble (i.e., Orchestra or Chorus) during their freshmen year. Please note that acceptance into the Orchestra is based on audition and approval of the instructor.
Students meet in heterogeneous groups for a smaller group lesson once every six school days. Band students have a two or three mod lesson. Lessons are required for all students involved in major performing organizations.
THE
ENSEMBLES
The music department encourages all students to explore and develop their talents and interests to the fullest. There are courses and performing groups for the person who is a novice in music and offerings for more experienced musicians as well.
CONCERT BAND (Grade 9)
Due to the
increasing numbers of students participating in the band program, the Concert
Band has been created. This is the first year that the 9th Grade has
a separate ensemble. The Concert Band is comprised of the younger musicians in
the high school band program; so, it is designed for the development of basic
fundamentals, technique and musicianship skills.
The Concert Band performs intermediate level literature (NYSSMA level III and
IV). We will perform at all school Band Concerts, the NYSSMA Major Ensemble
Evaluation Festivals and the Music in the Parks Festival. Prior to each school
concert, an after school dress rehearsal is held (please see calendar of events
and save the dates!). Students are notified in a timely manner of all extra
rehearsals. Attendance, at all scheduled performances and rehearsals, is
required.
The Symphonic Band is composed of the 10th through 12th grade students striving for musical proficiency and mastery of essential performance techniques. Students in the Symphonic Band show commitment to the mastery of basic technique and work to develop a natural and characteristic sound on their instrument.
The Symphonic Band performs intermediate – advanced level literature (NYSSMA levels IV – V). The Symphonic Band has earned Silver and Gold ratings at both the NYSSMA Major Ensemble Evaluation Festival and the Great East Festival.
The Symphonic Band performs at all school concerts and State Festivals. Prior to each school concert an after school dress rehearsal is held (please see calendar of events and save the dates!). Students are notified in a timely manner of all extra rehearsals. Attendance at all scheduled performances and rehearsals, is required.
