Additional Performance OpportunitiesCurriculum & Instruction

CURRICULUR IMPLEMENTATION OF NATIONAL AND STATE LEARNING STANDARDS

In-class activities support the New York State Learning Standards and the National Standards for Music Education.  Students perform a variety of material, including classical, standard wind band, jazz/blues and popular literature.

With an emphasis on performance- and knowledge-based skills, students develop fundamentals in posture, breathing, embouchure, fingerings, counting, reading standard music notation, articulation and overall tone production.  Individual progress on supplemental material (i.e., solo/small ensemble music, scales, rhythm exercises and etudes), reinforce concepts that engender performance confidence.  Daily practice is a must, and private instruction is strongly encouraged.

In addition to traditional wind band/western classical training, students are encouraged to create, compose and improvise.
